“Definitely not to be confused with Michael Grandage’s staging of the Disney juggernaut, Frozen, currently played at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, this 1998 play by Bryony Lavery is a much more grown-up and disturbing proposition. First seen at Birmingham Rep in 1998, before transferring to the National Theatre and subsequently Broadway, Lavery’s three hander is a delicate, harrowing, and knotty examination of forgiveness and redemption. There are three characters: Agnetha, a criminal psychologist who is studying the brains of those convicted of terrible crimes; Ralph, a paedophile and serial killer; and Nancy, whose daughter Rhona went out one day to granny’s house down the road, encountered Ralph and never came back. It is a remarkable play and sometimes a difficult watch, and one that offers no easy answers as it contemplates the pain and gift of forgiveness.Read More →
